Brown Box Ask
Originally tasked with designing simple brown boxes for Luma's packaging, I recognized that this approach could weaken the brand’s identity and impact.
Analyzing Competitor
I conducted market research by analyzing competitor packaging and boxes with printed sleeves and images, providing insights into how Luma's packaging could differentiate itself on store shelves.
Designs To Explore
I mocked up blue and white packaging designs to explore cost-saving options while enhancing brand visibility, ensuring Luma’s products stood out in local stores with a cohesive and recognizable identity.
Full Cover Sleeve
I experimented with full-color sleeves that fit over the brown boxes, offering a cost-effective solution that allowed for versatile branding. This approach enabled us to tailor packaging for different products while maintaining a cohesive and eye-catching design.
The Blue Box
I developed a blue-and-white line art packaging design to help dealers easily identify different products. This approach balanced cost efficiency by using only two colors while maintaining clarity and consistency across the product line.
The Solution
Recognizing the limitations of the initial packaging plan, I sought innovative solutions to elevate Luma’s brand presence while balancing cost efficiency. By introducing creative elements such as full-color sleeves, two-tone line art designs, and bold blue packaging concepts, I demonstrated how thoughtful design could enhance product differentiation and brand recognition in local stores. These solutions not only aligned with budget constraints but also provided dealers with a clearer and more professional presentation of Luma’s product line.
Augmented Reality To The Rescue.
To optimize the packaging design process and cut costs on print samples, we turned to augmented reality (AR) for testing. With product managers and teams located across the United States, we used AR to virtually place packaging designs in test stores. This allowed dealers from various regions to review and provide feedback without the need for physical prototypes.
By gathering insights from these remote tests, we were able to refine the packaging design in real-time, making improvements based on actual dealer input. This innovative approach not only saved time and money but also ensured the final design was more effective and aligned with market needs.
Design System For NVR Packaging
I designed a flexible system for the NVR packaging to accommodate different product sizes, features, and model numbers. By utilizing consistent design elements, such as modular icons and uniform layouts, I ensured that each packaging variant maintained a cohesive look, making it easy to transition from one product to another while highlighting key features and variations.
Design System For Cameras
I created a design system for the camera packaging that incorporated machine learning features and multiple icons for different models and capabilities. By using consistent line drawings and a cohesive layout, I ensured that despite the diverse features and product variations, all camera packaging maintained a unified and professional look across the entire product line.
The Final
The final result of the project was highly successful. The redesigned packaging significantly enhanced the visibility of the product line in local stores, making it easy for dealers to quickly identify the packaging, understand key features, and distinguish between different camera and NVR models. The cohesive design, which worked seamlessly with local signage, helped create a unified and attractive display that stood out on the shelves. Despite the complexity of incorporating various features and product variations, the project remained within budget, using a cost-effective two-color scheme that still delivered high impact and clarity across the product range.
The Case Study
The Luma packaging redesign was such a success that it became the standard for packaging across many other Snap One brands. Its cohesive design system, which balanced brand identity with cost-effectiveness, proved to be a valuable model for future projects. The innovative approach to feature icons, consistent use of color, and attention to user experience made the packaging not only more visually appealing but also easier for dealers to understand and identify. As a result, this packaging solution was adopted as a benchmark, streamlining design processes and maintaining consistency across a variety of product lines.
Redesigning the Luma Packaging
Overview
Determined to elevate the packaging, I went beyond expectations by creating 3D renderings and using augmented reality (AR) to test different designs. This process demonstrated how a bold blue package, aligned with Luma’s branding, would stand out on store shelves and reinforce the product's premium identity.
